Summer 20/21

WMRMYC Inc Summer Handicap Series RD 3 Manly Marina - 24th January 2021(2)

sm55tSailing Sunday January 24 2021

Sundays sailing was a handicap race day enjoyed by nine starters.

The breeze was a fairly consistant light easterly giving our sailors a coarse with a good punch straight up the channel. Our coarse for the day was to tack to the laid windward mark and return back through the starting gate, 2 laps and finish. Ten races were managed and an enjoyable day was held even though some of us managed to find the seaweed around our keels that slowed our boats.

Results for the day were

A tied 3rd place for John McLachlan & Andrew Milne

2nd place to John Dousi

1st placing to Rob Higgs

See you all next race day.

WMRMYC Inc Summer Scratch Series RD 3 Manly Marina - 17th January 2021

IMG 5083The 1st Scratch race for 2021 saw a good fleet of 11 skippers turn up for the 10 scheduled races. With the breeze direction in a perfect direction (east south east) for Manly harbour the pro set a two lap windward leeqard with a gate at the bottom.

Starts were competitive and a couple of Ocs calls were made. There were also plenty of Port and starboard incidents mainly at the distance mark as eyes were tested. Some were forgiven for this reason however in general penalties were taken with good sportsmanship. The stripe on the windward mark definitely made the Pro's job easier for mark touching calls with it spinning being the proof in the pudding.

The wind was between 5 and 8 knots and some good shifts made the racing interesting and also allowed some overtaking and lead changes possible.

While a good start helped it was not the be all and end all. Mike got off to a good start with 4 wins in a row however it was closer than it looked and he finally came undone being passed by two boats in hot push it just before the final leg of race 5.

Some deserving wins and places went to Andrew Milne and Andrew Wilson with his lovely timber Corby. Dennis Patterson was also a dark horse with plenty of good podium places.

Throughout the fleet skippers had moments of glory most noticeably Steve's assault on the top order which was eventually undone as a boat heading to windward made some good contact forcing him well back. He took it well and continued on to have an enjoyable day as all skippers would have.

In the end on a point or separated boats from 2nd to about 7th. Unfortunately there wete a couple of retirements and a late startwr however it was certainly a great start to the year. Thanks to Ray Wilson for being Pro and John for scoring. It a great to see the members working as a team with the collecting and returning the dinghy and marks.

WMRMYC Inc Summer Handicap Series RD 2 Manly Marina - 20th December 2020

20decsmManly produced a fantastic day with Ideal Conditions, a nice N/E Sea Breeze about 8 to 10 Knots.

7 Boats contested the Races and all Sailors sailed in good spirit.

A welcome back to Dale Smith who is busy juggling Sailing with Teenagers and Work.

The KMR is starting to come together, with a few good results on the Day. But some very generous H’Caps helped a lot.

Consistant Results from Steve Zaphir and John Mclachlan got them 2nd and 3rd respectively, Well Done All. Also a couple of First Places from Denis Patterson who chased me around the course all day, well done Denis.

Good to see a perspective Member looking for a boat. Peter Kemp is certainly the man to talk to. Thanks Pete,
Peter always has time for others and also showed me a few rigging tips before we started.

Merry Xmas All.
John Dousi,
KMR.

WMRMYC Inc Summer Scratch Series RD 2 Manly Marina - 6th December 2020

IMG 3524Conditions were looking good for sailing when we arrived at the Marina. A light but steady northerly at about 3 -4 knots and the tide low, but rising. As the morning developed, the breeze rose slightly in strength to provide some excellent sailing conditions.

Unfortunately, our race day coincided with the Sth. Qld IOM Championships being held at Paradise RYC at the Gold Coast with a number of our top skippers competing there. As a result our numbers were down to only five skippers.

It was pleasing to have Dennis back on the water after a long absence due to major medical problems. Unfortunately for Dennis, a rigging failuue restricted his day to only five races.
Rob unfortunately, is still coming to terms with his beautifully built wooden boat and had to retire also due to rudder problems after only five races.

This left only John, Steve and Andrew to battle it out for the placings. The up side of this was that we each got a place on the rostrum. Despite the lack of numbers the racing was extremely close [with shades of match racing].

The breeze suited a windward and return two lap course along the Marina Esplanade which was great for our passing spectators. It was interesting to see a number of spectators who were obviously knowledgeable about the principles of sailing explaining to wives / children what was happening on the water.

With no member in a position to keep the rescue dinghy, and to deliver it each race day, our option is to store it and the buoys at the adjacent pool for safe keeping. It therefore falls to the younger / fitter members to collect and return it each race day.

For those involved you have our thanks.

Many thanks to Dennis for running the day and we look forward to him competing with us again. Peter was the back marker most of the day and was able to attain 1st place.

The racing was enjoyed by all. We look forward to racing against the skippers who have just competed in the regatta at Gladstone with distinction. Well done guys .
