Winter Handicap Series RD 5, Manly Marina - 15th September 2019

SUN 15th SEPTEMBER 2019 420What a perfect day at the Marina. The sun was shining, the tide was making, the water was clean, families were walking their children and dogs and seagulls drifted round on the water, but there was virtually no breeze.

What breeze there was ,was coming from the east so the sailing committee decided on a two lap windward and return course. Eleven skippers launched their boats and racing got underway at 9.30.

The gusts, such as they were, tended to alternate, favouring one side of the course or the other as the races progressed so, picking the correct option usually resulted in better placings. As usual, the windward mark proved a major problem mark. Judging distances and speed in the light conditions resulted in numerous bouy contacts, port and starboard incidents or boats missing the bouy.

Andrew M,Ian and Dennis handled the early races well but smoko was called after three races, hoping for a better breeze later. After the break, with a slightly better breeze, the back markers Andrew W, Tony, Dale and Ray started to make their presence felt. Peter and Russel had mixed results with their new boats. Both Eddie and John had a good run in the final races, but left their run too late.
