Handicap Summer Series Round 1 18th November 2018

IMG 4610Nine skippers presented to race in forecast 20 knot winds.

Scott Warton was PRO and set a starboard course of two triangles and a sausage, the windward mark being in the centre channel.

The first five races were A rig but some chose their B rigs. The wind freshened to 13 to 15 knots with bullets to 17 knots and all skippers were in B rig for the second half of racing. Josh Mortensen did not have a B rig so sailed in C rig and scored a creditable first place in this the smallest rig. Dudley Allard sailed off scratch and achieved three wins. Andrew Milne and myself gained two wins each and Tony Grey and Mike Freebairn, both back markers, had a win each. Ray Wilson retired after the first race with boat problems.

There was significant flotsam, mainly leaves washed into the bay from the heavy rains the night before. Most skippers experienced a leaf or two caught on their rudder or keel at some stage during the racing.

As usual there was lots of public interest and in the heavier winds when the boats were flying that common question of “do the boats have motors? Or is it just the sails?” was asked often.

Thankyou to Scott for PRO duties, Dale Smith for setting the course and all those members that assisted with launching and retrieving the rescue dinghy and also to the barbecue cook.
